A very hard to find piece of Moroccan and African history. This smaller mortar and pestle was created in the late 19th to early 20th century, carved from single piece of wood.
This mortar & pestle was used to mill wheat in southern Morocco. The original mill has been restored and redecorated with hand-engraved silver melange stars and fibulae, with decorative rivets. The top and bottom are wrapped in silver melange repousse. The Moroccan pestle has been further decorated with a silver melange band.
This beautiful work is the trademark of the renowned woodworking shop in Amazraou, Morocco. Using traditional woodworking techniques handed down from father to son through generations, their work is rich with baraka–the good feelings that come from a piece truly made with love and care.
